Draw Mix Paint Class
Still-Life Workshop
Painting from life in this 8-day class is a great way to learn all the basic rules of drawing, color mixing, and painting. By the end of the class, you will know how to draw in proportion accurately, how to mix realistic colors, and how to paint while protecting your color and value. This workshop is all about learning good painting habits and unlearning bad ones.
I will paint a small still life during the first two days of class, giving talks and answering questions while I paint. To give you an idea, here are some short clips from one of my demos:
On the third day, students will pick out the objects they want to paint and set them up in their provided shadowbox, while I explain lighting techniques and the technical aspects of how still-life setups will translate to paint. For the remainder of class, students will draw their still life, prepare their palette, and paint while I offer guidance and help students as needed. All painting will be done from life.
Nothing I teach in this course requires any experience or natural ability at all, so don’t feel intimidated — I can teach anyone to paint! These still lifes were painted by students in one of my previous classes:
